But it doesn't know that.

BEGGAR
See the smoke trembling under the roof as if with fright? Yet when it gets out in the air, it has the whole sky to swirl about in. But it doesn't know that, so it huddles and trembles in the soot under the roof. It's the same with people. They quiver like a leaf in the storm, afraid of what they know, and what they don't know.
Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring" ("Jungfrukällan") (1960) (screenplay by Ulla Isaksson; translation possibly by Lars Malmström & David Kushner)

  1. Are you a Bergman fan, Matt? Do you have a favorite film of his? (Mine is probably Winter Light, but that might just be because it was the first film of his I saw and it made an impression.)

Netflix recommended "Saraband" for me which was a film he did in 2003. I had never heard of it before - have you seen it? I put it in my que, so we'll see how it is.

Also - how do you indent the text when you are creating a post?

  2. Hi Kyle, I'd never seen any Bergman films before this year, but now I've seen five (two on the big screen!) and I'm becoming a big fan. I really enjoyed "Hour of the Wolf" and "Smiles of a Summer Night," which were the first two I saw (on Netflix streaming). "The Seventh Seal" too.

I haven't seen "Winter Light" or "Saraband" but I will put them on my to-watch list.

Recently I scored a one-dollar copy of Four Screenplays by Ingmar Bergman at a used bookstore that I'm excited to read. He has some really fantastic dialogue that I'd have posted here if I could've remembered it exactly.
